About Mamre

Mamre is situated about 45 minutes from the centre of Cape Town northern region of the city. The town was established by Moravian Missionaries and as such the church plays a major role in the lives of the inhabitants of Mamre.

It was originally established as a Military outpost in the 1600’s by Governor Simon van Der Stel to protect settlers  from the local inhabitants who wanted their land and cattle back.

During 1960’s the ANC’s Military Wing established a training camp in Louw’s Kloof, in the hilltops of Mamre.  The town is rich in history.
